A HIGHLIGHT of the British flower enthusiasts' calendar will take place in Weston at the end of the month.The British Orchid Council (BOC) is holding the Orchid Congress 2006 at the Winter Gardens on September 30 and October 1.British Orchid Council congresses, normally held every 18 months, form one of the pinnacles of the British orchid calendar.This year is the 22nd congress organised by the BOC and the prestigious event returns to the South West for the first time since 1988.The congress is a two-day orchid show and lecture programme and has attracted exhibitors, speakers and visitors from around the world.More than 200 people have already registered for the event, which features exhibits staged by orchid societies from all over the country. All plants in the show will be judged for BOC awards by teams of qualified judges and the Royal Horticultural Society's orchid committee will also meet to consider plants for RHS awards.This year the congress will have 50 society and trade exhibits from across the UK and Europe, as well as the USA, Hong Kong and Taiwan.The Orchid Congress will be open to the public from 11am-5pm on September 30 and 10am-4pm on October 1. Day tickets for the show will be available on the door priced £5 and each lecture will cost £3.
