The ever-popular Fairport Convention are back in town to delight their fans.

DESCRIBED as the originators of British folk-rock, Fairport Convention have just celebrated their 45th anniversary, and they are marking the occasion with another nationwide tour.

They will be stopping off at The Playhouse, Weston, on February 14 to perform tracks from their most recent studio album, the critically acclaimed Festival Bell, along with songs from their vast back catalogue. The show will also include an opening set from John Watterson, who will perform revivals of Jake Thackray’s quirky tunes.

Fairport’s current line-up features Simon Nicol on guitar and lead vocals, Dave Pegg on bass and backing vocals, Chris Leslie on fiddle, mandolin, bouzouki and lead vocals, Ric Sanders on violin and Gerry Conway on drums and percussion.

The band started out rehearsing at a house named Fairport, the family home of Simon Nicol, and so was born the name of a band which has endured for nearly four decades.

Fairport played their first concert in a church hall in May 1967 and within months they had signed a contract with Island Records, releasing their first album by the end of the year. They have continued to go from strength to strength and still pack out venues all over the country.

Tickets for The Playhouse concert, priced £17.50-19, are available from the box office on 01934 645544 or online at
