Downton Abbey’s leading lady will be treading the boards in Bath over the coming weeks.

Elizabeth McGovern, best know for playing Lady Grantham in the ITV period drama, will be performing in comedy God of Carnage in Bath.

Amanda Abbington (Sherlock, Mr Selfridge), Nigel Lindsay (Victoria, Unforgotten) and comedian Ralf Little will also star.

Yasmina Reza’s ruthless comedy analyses the often humorous world of middle-class parenting.

It has had a great run in the West End and has picked up Tony and Olivier awards for best play and best new comedy.

The action begins with a punch up – but not the usual brawl outisde the local boozer on a Friday night.

This fight takes place in the playground, with 11-year-olds Ferdinand and Bruno at the heart of it.

Both boys’ parents agree the best way to solve their differences is with a face-to-face sit down and a chat, but not everything goes to plan. Once alcohol gets involved, civil niceties give way to barbs aplenty.

God of Carnage was originally written in French before being translated into English and a stage show produced.

In 2011, a film version of the tale, called Carnage was made. Jodie Foster and Kate Winslet were among the high-profile names involved.

McGovern is a star of stage, screen and film having enjoyed a career of more than 30 years and she shows no sign of slowing up.

The talented American is best know for playing Cora in Downton Abbey, but has also starred in a number of films, including The Commuter, alongside Liam Neeson, and The Wife.

Abbington meanwhile is equally no stranger to British audiences, having starred as John Watson’s wife Mary in the BBC’s popular adaptation of Sherlock.

God of Carnage will be performed at the Theatre Royal Bath from August 29 to September 15.

Shows will begin at 7.30pm each day, apart from September 5 where the show will begin 30 minutes earlier.

There will be matinees every Thursday and Saturday at 2.30pm, apart from August 30.

Tickets, priced £15-38.50, are available at www.theatreroyal.org.uk or on 01225 448844.
