CHARLES Dickens' much-loved novel Great Expectations is to be given a month-long run in Bristol this autumn.
The famous story will be told with minimalist cast and staging ensuring the epic tale remains the centre of attention.
The plot revolves around the life of Pip and his pursuit of love and riches.
From an early age his infatuation with reclusive Miss Havisham’s daughter Estella emerges but mistakes and poor timing keep them apart.
When Pip is told to head to London to pick up a large sum of money, he wrongly assumes he has been bequeathed it by Miss Havisham.
However he has instead been left the cash by Abel Magwitch, an ex-convict who Pip helped in his youth.
But just as everything appears to be falling into place accidents and conflict see Miss Havisham and Magwitch die and Pip’s life unravels.
Neil Bartlett’s adaptation uses just nine actors to tell the heart-breaking story which culminates in an emotional finale between Pip and Estella.
Adjoa Andoh (Invictus, Doctor Who), Tom Canton and Timothy Walker (Four Weddings And A Funeral) will lead the cast.
Great Expectations will be at the Bristol Old Vic from September 27 to November 2.
Tickets, priced £5-30, are available on 01179 877877 or online at www.bristololdvic.org.uk
