With 2019 having arrived, Weston's Playhouse Theatre is busy preparing to offer up some top-of-the-bill comedians and five-star performances, and the Mercury is offering one reader the chance to see them for free.

The Mercury has teamed up with the High Street theatre to offer one person the chance to see a show of their choice with a friend once a month for 12 months for free.

The theatre has a variety of exciting shows set to hit the stage later this year.

Both Awful Egyptians and Terrible Tudors from the Horrible Histories series will be shown.

From the fascinating Pharaohs to the power of the pyramids, families can discover the foul facts about the meanest mummies in Egypt.

Horrible Histories will be at the theatre from Tuesday to January 19 – so there is still time to see the show if you are chosen as the lucky winner.

It is not just theatre which you can enjoy at The Playhouse, there is also plenty of comedy on offer.

In the upcoming year alone, some incredible comedians are set to entertain Weston audiences including Muddle Class citizen Jason Manford, Terribly Funny Jimmy Carr and The Count Of Cornwall Jethro.

The Playhouse also hosts a number of children’s shows including Milkshake! Live where characters such as Shimmer and Shine, Fireman Sam, Noddy and Digby Dragon all star in this brilliant family-friendly production which comes to town next month.

Other dates to note in the theatre’s calendar is the arrival of Paul Nicholls and Chris Fountain in Rain Man, which is based on an Oscar-winning film which starred Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman.

The tale of a self-centred salesman who discovers his long-lost brother will be at the venue from April 15-20.

If you are looking for some music, then look no further than The Playhouse with its variety of star-studded performers.

One to pop in the diary is a performance from multi-million-record-selling artist Barbara Dickson who will sing The Caravan Song and Another Suit In Another Hall and plenty more.

She will bring her band to The Playhouse on March 9.

Parkwood Theatre’s regional general manager, Mark Thompson, said: “This is by far our favourite competition of the year and an opportunity for the lucky winners to join us and perhaps even experience different live entertainment offerings which they would not usually attend.

“It is our opportunity to give a little something back to someone within our community, a community which support us all year round and for whom we would not be able to do what we do without their support. It is our Willy Wonka moment.

“Over the past five years our venue has gone from strength to strength, more people from our town and further afield are attending our venue year on year with attendance numbers growing for all shows.

“The annual growth has allowed us to take further risks on what shows we programme, bring new and exciting live experiences to North Somerset, create bigger and better pantomimes and invest back into the venue, building a better space for not only the shows which attend but also residents who use the space regularly.

“All of this is only possible by the continued commitment to attend shows and the love for The Playhouse our community has – we thank everyone for the support annually and hope this competition allows someone to experience the magic and escapism regional theatre can offer for the whole year.”
