WIN: Take leap of faith with Black Cat Free Fall tickets
PUBLISHED: 15:00 12 July 2019
For some people, falling face first into a cave would be their worst nightmare, but, at Cheddar Gorge & Caves, there is a new attraction designed around the concept.
The Black Cat Free Fall is perfect for adrenaline-seeking visitors who might wish to see the caves in a different way.
Thrill-seekers need not look any further than this Rocksport experience right in the heart of one of Britain's most spectacular show caves.
I went down to the caves to see what all the buzz was about and was joined by eight other excited but nervous tourists who decided to take the plunge into Gough's Cave, with the youngest participant being just 12 years old.
It was soon time to put on my 'big girl pants' - or, in this case, a harness - and head on through Cheddar's historic caves for this once-in-a-lifetime experience.
I climbed up a 30ft ladder and gulped as I looked a long way down into the cave.
The instructors were brilliant and keen to help us get in as many jumps as we could during our 90-minute session.
The first jump was, by far, the hardest, with a harness allowing us to free fall for the first 20ft before being slowed to an elegant landing after the final 10ft.
After that, it was all fun and games.
I walked away having fallen backwards into the cave and conquering the 'super Ted' - aptly named after a gentleman called Ted, who decided to spread his arms and let himself drop over the edge without any fear.
The leap of faith was well worth it. My adrenaline was pumping, and I was keen to go again and again - much like the others in my party.
The Mercury has teamed up with Cheddar Gorge & Caves to offer two lucky readers a pair of adult tickets to try the free fall.
This competition will close at 10am on July 18.
Usual Archant rules apply and the editor's decision is final. By entering this competition, you are agreeing to be contacted by Archant and the attraction.
